Support Available:

Schools: The Maryland Psychiatric Society and the Maryland Regional Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry have teamed up to offer support to the public and private schools. If you would like a psychiatrist to talk to groups of teachers, guidance counselors or students, please call Judy Jacobson at the MPS at (410) 625-0232 to find out who is available to help in your area.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is currently recruiting mental health professionals to become members of the Maryland Disaster Mental Health Volunteer Corps.  There is a particular need for psychiatrists at this time.  Volunteers will provide counseling to victims of natural or man-made disasters that affect residents in the state of Maryland.  The University of Maryland, Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences will provide volunteer training.  Psychiatrists must be licensed and in good standing with the Board of Physicians.  Prospective volunteers must apply and register for training by either visiting www.umaryland.edu/mental_health to download and print the schedule and forms, or phone 410-328-8404 or email slips001@umaryland.edu to request the schedule and forms.

If you are a trained medical professional, mental health worker or trained in disaster response, please volunteer online and the Red Cross will respond to you as soon as possible. To volunteer go online to: http://redcross-cmd.org/Chapter/Volunteer/form.html  If the link does not work, go to the main Red Cross Central Maryland Chapter page at http://www.redcross-cmd.org/.

Psychiatrists: to volunteer to assist our local schools email or call the MPS at (410) 625-0232 with information on how to best contact you. Requests for assistance will be handled on a case by case basis regarding each schools' particular need. We will try to match school requests with members based on geographical location when possible. You don't need to specialize in child psychiatry to volunteer!
