Maxie T. Collier MD and Addison Pope MD were honored by awards named for them, presented by the Black Mental Health Alliance in May. The Maxie T. Collier Award was presented to Mrs. Anita Hill whose family has overcome odds to excel, has a positive outlook about the future, and has dutifully contributed to their family and community. Mrs. Hill has two adult sons with mental illness.
Dr. Collier was a leader in Maryland's psychiatry and mental health community. His work included helping start the Black Mental Health Alliance. He was Commissioner of Health for Baltimore City at the time of his death. He had previously served as Chief of Psychiatry at Liberty Medical Center, and as Assistant Commissioner of Health for Baltimore.
The Dr. Addison Pope Award was given to Michael A. Bryant MSW, LCSW and to Annelle Primm, MD for truly exhibiting a pioneering spirit, sharing knowledge and resources and for their dedication to the African-American family. Mr. Bryant is president of Universal Counseling Services and Director of the Upward Bound Program at Morgan State University. Dr. Primm is a psychiatrist and the Director of the Community Psychiatry Program at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Dr. Pope was active in community psychiatry and in public affairs as well as maintaining a private practice. He made many contributions to improve mental health services for the disadvantaged. He headed psychiatric emergency services for Baltimore City for many years, and was known as a pioneer in his profession.
Michael Torres, MD was one of three recipients of the Ujima Award, given to BMHA Board Members for professional service, cooperation, and collective work and responsibility to BMHA. Dr. Torres is the psychiatrist medical director for the Assertive Community Treatment Team at University of Maryland; he is a Clinical Instructor at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Director of Ebenezer AMEs Mental Health Clinic in Prince George's County, and staff psychiatrist at the Lansdowne Community Mental Health Clinic. Frank Katz and Linda Turner also received this award.
