The Maryland Psychiatric Society is a state medical specialty society, founded in 1950, whose physician members specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illnesses including substance use disorders. The MPS website was developed to inform the public and the members of the society about advocacy initiatives, legislation, and offer informative articles about issues relevant to psychiatry and mental illness. The site also offers an online search mechanism for psychiatrists in the state.

New Uniform Treatment Plan Form

Maryland’s Uniform Treatment Plan Form (UTP) has been streamlined thanks to the work of the MPS Managed Care Committee and others who are concerned with utilization review of mental health and substance abuse treatment. While the simplified UTP form is in effect beginning February 2006, the Maryland Insurance Administration is allowing a 90-day phase in period when both forms can be used.

The UTP form in Word format allows answers for most items to be typed directly into the document.

A UTP form in .pdf format is also available.

You can also find the form on the Maryland Insurance Administration’s web site at http://www.mdinsurance.state.md.us/

Medicaid Prescribing Information
Orders, etc.

The ten-day validity restriction for Maryland Pharmacy Program (Medicaid) prescription orders was removed from the regulations in 2002. (See document) Since the text is currently silent on the length of time a prescription order is valid, it reverts to regular pharmacy law, which provides for 120-day validity.  Therefore, Maryland Medicaid and Maryland Pharmacy Program prescription orders are valid the same length of time as other prescription orders, except controlled substances (which are good for 30 days).
