Consider becoming an APA Fellow
Almost 250 MPS members are currently eligible to become APA Fellows. We encourage you to apply to advance your membership status since this is an opportunity that comes only once a year. The deadline for receipt of Fellowship applications (including the two required letters of recommendation) is September 1.
The criteria for eligibility are:
· General Membership for at least five consecutive years
· Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the American Osteopathic Association
· Two letters of recommendation from current Fellows, Distinguished Fellows, Life Fellows, or Distinguished Life Fellows
· 30-day review period for the district branch to offer comments
· Approval by the APA Membership Committee
· Approval by the APA Board of Trustees
The Fellowship application and guidelines are available to download from the APA webpage at:
http://ww2.psych.org/Resources/Membership/EnrollmentFormsApplications/FellowshipGuidelinesandNominationForm.aspx If you are not sure whether you are eligible this year, please contact the MPS office by phone at 410-625-0232 or email at mps@mdpsych.org.
Letters in support of Fellow applications do not require the same level of detail as those for Distinguished Fellow nominees; a brief statement attesting to the member’s character and good standing as a psychiatrist in the community is fine. To find out if a colleague would be eligible to write a recommendation letter, check the MPS directory, the APA website or contact the MPS office by phone at 410-625-0232 or email at mps@mdpsych.org.
Members approved this year will officially become Fellows in December 2009, and will be invited to participate in the Convocation of Distinguished Fellows during the 2010 APA annual meeting in New Orleans. Fellow status is positive recognition for members who have demonstrated allegiance to their profession and commitment to the on-going work of the MPS and the APA. If you have any questions, please email membership@psych.org or call 1.888.35.PSYCH.
